Description

The meeting highlighted diaspora engagement, cultural diplomacy, digital communication, and practical cooperation to strengthen India-Thailand relations during the 80th anniversary.

Bangkok, 19 June 2026: As India and Thailand commemorate 80 years of diplomatic relations, a courtesy meeting was held with H.E. Mr. Puneet Agrawal, Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Thailand, to discuss ways to further strengthen the long-standing relationship between the two countries through cultural diplomacy, trade, tourism, education, regional cooperation, and deeper people-to-people engagement.

The interaction brought together members of the Indian community in Bangkok who share a commitment to strengthening India–Thailand relations and supporting the role of the Indian diaspora as a constructive bridge between the two nations. The discussions reflected the wider importance of India and Thailand’s shared civilisational heritage, historical linkages, Buddhist and cultural connections, economic cooperation, and regional partnership.

The delegation was led by Mr. Rahul Laxman Patil, Trade-HI Diplomacy Strategist, Researcher, and Advocate for Civilisational Dialogue and BIMSTEC Regional Cooperation. Mr. Patil has been actively engaged in promoting dialogue around India–Thailand relations, regional cooperation, cultural diplomacy, and the role of BIMSTEC as a bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia. His work focuses on strengthening understanding between communities, institutions, and regional stakeholders, particularly in areas such as trade, tourism, education, culture, and broader cooperation across the Bay of Bengal region.

The meeting also included Mr. Avneesh Kabra, an India-origin business and digital media professional based in Bangkok, along with other members of the Indian community. The discussion included the importance of building stronger and more regular channels of cooperation between representatives of the Government of India and the Indian community in Thailand, especially among business leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, and community organisations.

Mr. Patil shared his perspective on the value of civilisational dialogue, cultural diplomacy, and regional cooperation in strengthening the long-term relationship between India and Thailand. He also highlighted the importance of BIMSTEC-led cooperation, particularly given the role of both countries in connecting South Asia and Southeast Asia through the Bay of Bengal region.

The conversation further touched upon the role of the Indian community in Thailand in supporting a wider agenda of cooperation. This included the potential to encourage cultural exchanges, strengthen business and professional networks, support tourism and educational linkages, and help Indian and Thai stakeholders collaborate more effectively. The discussion also recognised that the Indian community can be an important partner in supporting the efforts of the Embassy of India and the wider Indian Mission in Thailand, in alignment with the broader relationship between the Government of India and the Government of Thailand.

Mr. Kabra also expressed his interest in supporting the Government of India and the Indian Mission in Thailand through stronger digital media and communication efforts. Given the growing importance of digital platforms in public engagement, diaspora outreach, tourism promotion, trade communication, and cultural diplomacy, he noted that a more visible and strategic digital presence can help amplify India’s initiatives in Thailand and improve awareness among both Indian and Thai audiences.

Speaking on the significance of the meeting, Mr. Kabra said: “It was an honour to be part of this meaningful interaction with H.E. Mr. Puneet Agrawal. India and Thailand share a relationship that goes far beyond diplomacy. It is rooted in history, culture, faith, trade, and people-to-people connections. My humble hope is to support efforts that bring the Indian community in Bangkok closer to the Indian Mission, and to contribute in any small way possible to strengthening India–Thailand relations.”

The meeting also reflected the importance of youth engagement, educational cooperation, civilisational dialogue, tourism promotion, business collaboration, and regional cooperation. These areas remain central to the future of India–Thailand relations, particularly as both nations continue to strengthen their role in connecting South Asia and Southeast Asia.

China’s expanding cultural influence across Southeast Asia is not inherently threatening. The concern arises when cultural diplomacy becomes tied to economic dependence, digital platforms, media narratives, education, tourism and political pressure. Over time, this can narrow public debate, normalise Beijing’s strategic preferences and weaken the region’s cultural and diplomatic autonomy. Thailand is important because of its economic links with China, position in mainland Southeast Asia and civilisational connections with India.

India should not respond with propaganda or confrontation. It needs a sustained, locally grounded cultural strategy: expand scholarships and academic exchanges, strengthen Indian studies and language programmes, support Buddhist and civilisational networks, invest in Thai-language media, promote contemporary Indian cinema, technology and entrepreneurship, and build partnerships with universities, creators and community institutions. Cultural outreach must be matched by trade, connectivity, tourism and diplomatic engagement. India’s advantage is familiarity without domination. Its objective should be to widen Southeast Asia’s choices, reinforce ASEAN autonomy and offer Thailand a balanced, plural regional partnership.

As India and Thailand mark 80 years of diplomatic relations, such engagements underline the value of community participation in diplomacy. They also demonstrate the potential of the Indian diaspora in Thailand to support friendship, mutual understanding, business growth, cultural exchange, and long-term regional cooperation.

Mr. Patil and Mr. Kabra reaffirmed their commitment to contributing constructively to initiatives that promote closer engagement between the Indian community, the Embassy of India, Thai institutions, and relevant public and private stakeholders. The meeting served as a meaningful step towards deepening dialogue and exploring practical ways in which individuals and community representatives can support the continued growth of India–Thailand relations.

Following the meeting, plans are underway for a cultural event in Bangkok, bringing together members of the Indian community across different regional and linguistic backgrounds. The event is meant to strengthen people-to-people ties, an area Ambassador Agrawal specifically flagged as central to the relationship going into 2027. For India, this kind of grassroots engagement carries added weight given Thailand’s deepening economic ties with China in recent years. A cultural gathering won’t shift trade figures, but it does something official visits can’t: it puts ordinary people, not just diplomats and executives, at the center of the relationship.

As India and Thailand look toward eight decades of diplomatic relations in 2027, this meeting and the planned cultural gathering reflect a shared commitment to building ties that extend beyond trade and government channels. We look forward to sharing further details on the Bangkok event as plans are finalized.
